Where to Install Shared Radios in a Facility

How to pick radio station locations using traffic patterns, power availability, sightlines, and coverage — plus placements to avoid.

Where a shared radio station lives determines whether it actually gets used correctly. A station placed for the convenience of installation — near an unused outlet in a back corner — will be ignored in favor of wherever people naturally already are. Placement should start from how people move through the facility, not from where wiring happens to be easiest.

Map the traffic pattern first

Before picking a wall, walk the floor at shift change and note where people naturally converge: entrances, time clocks, break room doors, the top of a main aisle. A radio station placed at one of these points gets picked up and returned as part of a path people already take. A station placed off that path adds a detour, and detours get skipped under time pressure.

Confirm power availability early

A charging station needs power, and not every wall has an outlet nearby. Rather than compromising on location because of wiring convenience, identify a small number of ideal locations from the traffic map first, then check which can be powered without a major electrical project. It's usually cheaper to run a short extension of conduit to a good spot than to accept a bad location because it already has power.

Protect sightlines and avoid obstruction

A station tucked behind stacked pallets, parked equipment, or a swinging door will be blocked exactly when it's needed most. Choose a wall with a clear, permanent sightline — not a spot that happens to be open today but will collect inventory or equipment within a month. Height matters too: mount at a level reachable without a ladder or excessive bending, generally chest to shoulder height for most adults.

Consider coverage if there's more than one station

In larger facilities, one station rarely serves the whole floor well. Spacing stations near the major work zones or exits — rather than clustering them near the office — keeps the walk to return a radio short from anywhere on the floor. A facility with widely separated departments (receiving vs. shipping, for example) generally needs a station near each, not one shared station in the middle that's inconvenient to both.

Placements to avoid

  • Directly next to loud equipment or in high-noise zones, where the speaker mic is hard to hear
  • Inside offices or rooms with restricted access, if the radios need to be usable by the whole shift
  • Low-traffic corners chosen only because they had an available outlet
  • Locations without a clear, unobstructed sightline from the main walking path

Placement checklist

  • Location chosen from a traffic map of the facility, not from wiring convenience
  • Power confirmed or planned for before the location is finalized
  • Sightline to the station stays clear even as inventory or equipment shifts
  • Mounting height is reachable without a ladder or excessive bending
  • Multiple stations are spaced near major work zones if the facility is large
  • Noise level at the chosen spot won't interfere with the speaker microphone
